Thank you for presenting your side of the story. I was in the cult in the early 80s too and find it revealing that half-hearted discipleship was becoming more prevalent. It existed before and I am sure it existed then and it exists now. We used to call them catacombs, friends, kings, etc. who were never part of the real corps. I didn't know it was as prevalent as you portray it. In fact, although it was your experience, I doubt it was prevalent.
In general, though, I see how their message had to mellow down a bit, otherwise AIDS would be as rampant as herpes is in the ranks. With all the attention the cult has been getting, they have to present a cleaner image and, of course, deny what they really believe and do behind closed and secured doors. Maybe it also had something to do with the people and the geographical place where you were but judging by what even Davidito said, things continue as they have always been.
