You used Thorwald's post to demonstrate, that actually there's "nothing bad" about the X...I however demonstrated ...it's debatable...if you get to the nitty gritty of the Greek/Latin language-background of X-mas...whether you can identify X with Chi...which you need for Greek: Christos...that's what it kind of "replaces"...if the replacement is faulty...then your "pacifying" in 6) towards FH is simply void...not to say nonsense...& it makes me wonder, whether you read Thorwald's post and may be you can reflect further with the wiki-article, how the X-mass defense-argumention runs...it has just the problem, that we write in Latin...and the "thought"...the word comes from the Greek...so capital/majuscal X is in Greek the letter Chi...look that up...(though not the western Greek...which led to Latin-alphabet it seems)...and not at all x=iks-pronounced but ch...just as the gutturals in Hebrew or the dear Swiss have it or the Dutch, the Arabs etc....etc. etc....so to be more consequent you could/rather should say Ch-mass...but nobody says that though, just pronouncing what they see in the Latin..capital writing
...I think sometimes the Chi was may be rendered (pronounced) K/Ch...you find some ancient writings talking about Chrestus, if I remember and spell it write (no time for googling now)...but never ...from what I could observe, it's pronounced "iks"...like IKS-mas...they had a different letter for that, different writing in Greek, the Xi (for now I can't type it here...you need to look that up...it's in unicode possible etc...here I copy and paste it for you again though: Ξ for /ks), like Xanthippae, wife of Sokrates or Xenofoon (double oo I just use here for long/omega o), pupil of Sokrates...so this argumentation...to pacify the Christians is really not so valid...IMO...
Just look up xylon (some imported word and also used in western languages! for wood)...like I did...in any Greek dictionary...and you will see what I mean...the initial x in xylon is not !!!! the CHI...though we use x in our Latinbased-alphabet, imitating, going by the sound of the Greek letter...but it's again: Ξ for /ks...it doesn't look like X at all...but it is pronounced like that...ks or x
..so X-mass-spelling-defenders have to explain...whether they mean the Greek spelling: capital X in Greek for Christos is the Chi...then they should say/read CH (i)....for it's not pronounced (i)ks or x...if they want to pronounce it still "iks"= x ...thinking it is that Greek letter for Christ...then they got it wrong!!!!...but everyone says iks=x-mas...which shows how wrong and off the beam they/we all are...which leads me to think...that that confusion got used...was masterminded.
Why would you abbreviate it anyway?...fine...this has nothing to do with your likes and dislikes...do as you please...personally...in your circle of friends/relatives & here on board, in your questions...whatever...so pls...why are you going overboard??? over a simple question for clarification??...you know some Christians...apparently...who are not offended...that's what you think, as much as you think, that they're Christians...who knows???
The yardstick is what the Bible says, for me...and I don't find any hesitation there to say Christ...If you want you can add to the thread/debate...the thought...whether it is at all the season for the birth of Jesus (some even deny, that he ever really existed), the whole sol invictus...and saturnalia debate...wouldn't have time for that now...may be someone else
In other words...may be that old man wasn't so totally off the beam about that???!!...like he was so often...just like for a standard ; )
Once in a while...I think he got it fairly right.
Anyway I know enough ..little bit of Greek to smell if something is quite off...unfortunately yet not enough for much deeper reflections...but I keep at it
....just to say...I don't trust every article there is, even in wikipedia...it's just people behind it & often they are not the biggest experts...just above average, but sometimes also very, very specialised
So after all my explaining again now & having listed your responses/replies before...I think it would have been far better if you had replied to FH in 3) something like (after all he just asked you!!!...mind you...have some patience...pleaaaaase)...: I can understand, why you think like that...but I am not interested anymore in the celebrating of the birth of Jesus, so for me it's rather just some holiday...an X-day...off work, no work...like x for: no work ; ) ...and I, CS..personally think, that Berg got it wrong...see whatever link
And see...dears CS...I think you didn't dig too deep there either...my take for now
Celebrate as you like...but at least show some patience with people who just ask to clarify something, my take, my etiquette...upbringing???...and I survived quite a few quarrels on different boards and I am not offended by what you're saying...you would have to use some other, bigger ammunition...so pls...mind also your quick conclusions about others
...frankly I still assume about you being easily triggered (pls don't mind me too much saying that...though you deny that)...I am sorry...for wounds you obtained in TFI or wherever else too and wish you sincerely all the best...really.
And also...I have every now & then a real bad time too and could easily explode or even do so...so I am not saying...I am better than you...so pls don't read it that way...thanks.
all the best and...seasons greetings... ; )
If you don't have any Greek dictionary handy...I will try to copy and paste the different words for you...so you'll see the difference and "will smell the coffee" ; )
P.S. I am thinking of X-mass in a new way...Xylon-day...but that would be passover...crucifixion-time...eastern has heathen-connotation...as I figure you know..So X(ylon)-mass would definetely be better than eastern...xylon is used in the NT for the cross too
So thanks!!!! for making me reflect about that too...nice
