There are a couple of places in my city I have visited on and off during the last years. They all function pretty much the same way. The main pastor holds a job just like anybody else and when something needs to get done able hands appear and get things done. In both places, people come from many different backgrounds and have different views an many things from politics to religion. I wouldn't say I belong to any of these churches but I respect them and they count me in when I am with them.
They have active youth groups, one more than the other, but the adults are a pretty active bunch as far as witnessing and bringing people to the Lord. Not everybody tithes, I don't, but many do. They are not rich churches with large numbers and big buildings, but I find them genuine and that is enough for me to have befriended them and participate in some of their activities.
But what I give is goods and finances, and they have acknowledged my position on the tithing thing. They know that I don't believe in that. And I liked their position that some have voiced, that the day they see the pastor having better standard of living than his followers, they will go on somewhere else.
Because the standard of living of Berg and those around him was so much higher than the average Joe and Mary Family and their little ones, the leadership sees the need to hide. If the pastor is really a shepherd he will be with the sheep in the fields and not in a castle as the master of all.
