I remembered that the movie that I saw was entitled Water. It was interesting in that I was unaware of this practice. As for the movie, it was colorful, but I found it to be a little too predictable. There were two concurrent plots: one a love story, and the other of a young widow (about 8 or 9) who was forced to leave her family and live in the widow's colony. The latter was the most interesting of the two.
