My wife is a great one for natural diet -- the idea being to get healthy and do good maintenance to prevent sickness in the first place. I'm a believer in that. Now we're making the most out of our juicer and everyday we both have two glasses of natural juices, mostly organic carrots, parsley, apples, with sometimes oranges and grapes and raw peppers thrown in for taste. We'll get a super combination worked out eventually, but for now, all that good natural stuff can only be doing us good. On top of that, she drinks 8-10 glasses of water a day. I'm trying to get there.
But germs are everywhere and sickness happens just the same. Just a few days ago she was struggling with a lingering sickness, and though she was on her feet and managing she was sick and really wiped out at night. She went to the doctor and found that she had three infections at once: a chest infection, a cold and strep throat. The doctor said that the fact that she was so faithful drinking water and natural juices was what had allowed her to cope despite her sicknesses. Had she not being doing that she'd have been knocked off her feet. He put her on medication, and it's helping get rid of the sickness.
So I believe in both. I do think that it's wise to become very informed about health food and natural remedies and to use them as much as possible. But I certainly don't hesitate to avail myself of the last hundred years of medical knowledge and breakthroughs. Yes, I realize some medicines can cause side effects or maybe not even work for me like they do for the guy in the commercials, but time after time I've found that they DO work to kick out infections. I use tylenol and it really does work. Of course, I'd use less tylenol if I drank eight glasses of water a day, and I'm working toward that.
I don't think it's always an either/or choice. Often it can be a combination. I can embrace a combination of prayer, natural healthy foods, naturopathy and modern medicines. We've tried Chinese herbs and I believe in shotzu (massaging pain points). The only thing I'm not keen about is acupuncture.
