I never heard of any of these details about how litnessing started, though I did lots of it myself down through the years, so thanks for sharing this.
I was mostly struck by the picture of Shula (probably carrying baby Mene) on the streets trying to raise funds for baby food and diapers. Like you said, One would have thought that Berg would have seen to it that his son and wife and grandchild might be better cared for a members of his family than being forced to beg on the street. But it showed what Berg really thought about his own son.
Berg gave money for years to Mother Eve, and I never heard of Deborah and Jethro lacking anything (of course, they were leaders in central offices), but like you say, once anyone was out of favor with Berg and he didn't feel he owed them anything, like the recent Mo quotes on child support showed, they were cut off. He was too busy giving gold necklaces to his "fishettes" and to his new "wives" and showing off what a generous "Don" he was by paying huge chunks of money to help his personal friends.
