I am a huge fan of deWaal. He spoke in my town recently, and I had the enormous pleasure of attending his lecture.
Someone posted something about Bonobo chimps and TFI society on this site's academic page once. If you're interested, you might search the archives for that discussion.
It's not clear to me what the basis is for your opinion of U.S. higher education. I attended graduate school at a major land grant university of a midwestern state, and I can guarantee that Foucault, Derrida & Lacan were not nearly as influential as you seem to suggest. Cultural anthropology was my area of "outside" study in my sociology programme. So I have familiarity with the French social constructivist school, but I can't say any of them held a huge grip on the research agenda.
