For me personally, when I wanted to study about power structures, I read Chimpanzee Politics, by Franz de Waal. Here you find almost a parallel picture of how David Berg ran the COG, with a chimp named Mama, childcare worker chimps, a lesbian chimp working with the leader, issues of reconciliation, power struggles, rhythmic music, love dances, plenty of sex – especially for the leader and his staff -- and most strange of all, chimps are not into incest apparently -- as Berg and Zerby were. At least according to this study, incest is not practiced by the chimps – the young female chimps in this study did not mate with father or uncles -- so the chimps are ahead in that area when compared with the doctrines of Berg and Zerby it would seem.
