The right to vote was given to male slaves after slavery was outlawed and BEFORE women were allowed to vote in America. Though some women held positions it was more the exception than the rule and during the witch burnings i.e. in Salem, women of all ages were accused and hanged or burned at the stake on the whim of church elders who were all men. I don't recall hearing about any men being burned at the stake though a few were hung that stuck up for their women against the religious fanatics that were picking them out for the kill.
