You are so right about friends. One person in particular I always thought would support me and my family if anything happened turned out to be the biggest jerk when the bullets counted.
On the other hand, another appeared out of the shadows and showed to us what a real Christian would do. They had 7 children and were struggling at best but gave us a helping hand out of their own need.
It was a lot like the "who is your neighbor" thing. Many in TF were not neighbors at all, but some were.
Out of the family is the same thing. Some people say they are your friends but turn on you and even step on your trust. The main difference is that we can pick who we want to associate and build a friendship with.
