i certainly agree that it plays a huge role. but i think the seductive logic of the serpent in the garden worked in a lot of other ways to keep us ensnared.
i guess flip wilson was in some ways right when he joked "the devil made me buy that dress!" but he was also right when he said "here come da judge!" (apologies to those to young to have seen "laugh in"..)
