I agree that Berg & Zerby are evil. Labelling character pathology (aka, personality disorders) as a psychiatric condition is a controversial area of behavioral healthcare--can a personality or character be "sick" in the same way the brain can be diseased and create hallucinations, distorted preceptions or extreme mood swings?
One hypothesis about character pathology is that it is a maladaptive coping pattern driven in some measure by an inability to regulate anxiety. Still, many people have anxiety disorders, and they are not character disordered. It's really complicated stuff, and I don't have any easy answers about where to draw the line on the subject of character.
