Choice and free will is a complex issue that's been debated here before. I believe that 90% of the time we make choices, even when the range of our choices are restricted and manipulated by others. Too often for Berg's victims, the choices were between bad, worse, and even worse than bad. But they were still choices.
IN GENERAL, people who feel they didn't a have choice also don't feel responsible for their actions. This is neither good or bad.
