I agree with you completely here. I also got out earlier than many, but a combination of things came together that made that possible. I do not fault any FG for not doing more while under the influence of the group. It was very very rough coming back to my country of origin as I had no support here, and we lived quite poorly for years. But for any that want to leave the group and return to the States, I am much more aware of resources now and how to get connected.
In my city there are a couple of really good places that take people in for extended period of time providing counseling, job training, etc. as well as assistance to get connected to county medical resources. One place has an on site clinic and is for youth up until age 21. They can keep all funds they raise once they start working and it is put into an account for them until they leave. There is one place that works with families that has some waiting time to get in (sometimes.) I think that is one of the hardest things for someone that has been in long term, is to get out and be "independent". It is kind of like what life was like for the "lifers" in prison after they got out on parole in "The Shawshank Redemption".
