Yes, some of the demands people make on us volunteers are incredible! But I find they are from people who are new to the site, and don't realize what we've taken on and what they're asking for.
ABout "those kids are flipping burgers" I know what you mean too! The way some of them turned up at job interviews, they figured there'd be work for them just on the basis of their knowing html. They figured if they knew css and some asp, they had it made for sure.
There are exceptions, but I haven't found that many survivors of this downturn to have isolated pillars of vertical knowlege, like super programming abilities alone and nothing else. They usually have something else to offer alongside, like integration, marketing, business skills, project management, leadership skills, something, anything... and whatever tech skills they end up using, it's often just a consequence of trying to get the job done, and having noboy else around better able to do it than someone who knows just what the business needs.
