The documentary I mentioned above shows photographic evidence that people trying to escape the flames were shot at by the government agents outside. Also, one of the folks in charge testified that he kept the fire department away from the compound until the whole thing had burned to the ground, and every last life was lost.
It is way worse than I was aware of before viewing the documentary.
I do remember watching it unfold on the news. When they were showing footage on CNN of the AFT getting shot up by the cult, I turned to Jane and said, "Those people will never get out alive now".
Koresh was a sleezbag. He should have been brought down. But, the government mishandled that whole thing from the start. After having looked at the facts, I think what happened was as bad an abuse of government power as there has ever been. One of the reasons we took down Saddam was because he turned his weapons on his own people. We did the same thing in Waco, although on a much smaller scale.
It's hard to talk about things thing without coming off like some kind of right wing conspiracy nut. But, I would dare anyone to watch "Waco: The Rules of Engagement" and not draw similar conclusions.
