After some careful observation, I think that Family members have carefully defined the word "abuse" in their minds so that things that they know happened don't fit their definition.
I've noted about three layers of denial on this issue:
1. It never happened
2. If it did happen the people who did it are now ex-members
3. If we did it, we already said we were sorry for doing it, and we don't do it anymore.
