The free labor thing is something that I've written about in the past.
I've spoken to SGA's who have told me that they performed in commercial family videos without pay.
I am a member of three performers unions. One particular film I worked on in 1982 paid me $2,500 for a bit part, and since then I've received over $7,500 in residuals. I still get checks for $10.00 or so once or twice a year.
The Family doesn't appear to pay any of that, and sells the videos along side commercial products at a similar price.
It is difficult to understand why they would have trouble making ends meet, even with the economic downturn. Of course, it is possible that they have overcommitted themselves. Or, that they just want to share less of the pie.
