The rampant manipulation was mind boggling. The most terrible thing I realized way much later was that The Family had a buil-in structure to reinforce the belief system. Berg was a clever manipulator but I often wonder how in hhis stupidity he was able to control so many for such long time. I haven't been able to find other answer than the thirst for power that some of his close associates had/have. Maria and Peter are still incapable of admitting something as small as the abuse that existed in the ranks.
