The problem unfortunately is that most psychiatrists/counselors have no knowledge of the dynamics of cult mind control and therefore can come across more clinical than helpful. You'll probably get the rare one that understands. THAT would be a great career for an ex-member to get into by the way, becoming a counseler for cult victims.
In the meantime, the resources on boards such as this one allow ex-members to access information on their own and counsel themselves. That helps. Like the article sin the "Articles" section for example.
Cult mind control is real and without that factor in the equation, behavior cannot be understood fully. This is not to explain away bad or illegal things people did in the group. There is responsibility nevertheless. Ignorance of the law is no excuse, and that also means being brainwashed to believe illegal things are legal is no excuse. I think this is the point SGAs are getting at. Mind control may explain much of what people did and why they stayed in bad situations for so many years, but it does not wipe away criminal acts.
But again, cult mind control is very real.
