Unlike the song "Hotel California" I don't believe that we were prisoners of our own device. I believe there was a very sociopathic and sick individual that was charismatic and started a movement with a plan in mind. He was studied in the ways of control and already a molester. Most of us that joined did not know this and were vulnerable and young and idealistic. We did not know what we were getting into would turn into (and already was what it was at the core) what it did when we got in. We had many things that kept us in. Orchestrated breaking of our own personalities and self esteem, (some were already on the way with this from their families of origin) and fear of death as punishment for turning our backs on that great gift of life (not) that we were given. (wuuuurrrrrgggg). When I left I felt like I was wrong. Why? Because I was so programmed about what I would do to my kids to get out or come back to America. I was 30 when I got out with 3 kids. We had no help. I was their only reliable adult and I was not a well camper. But we made it. And it was hell. I would like to see any exers leaving the family get help. I think one venue sorely needed is psychological help from professionals that are familiar or willing to familiarize themselves with the cult dynamics. All exers need help. I would like to see all get it. In all needed areas. Many need physical assistance including dental so their teeth don't have to stick out like Maria's, for example. And housing and education. But many that leave without wholistic help turn to alcohol, drugs and despair.
