Although it is not politically correct to say it, I think that the age of the victims points to the large concentration of homosexual males in the priesthood.
They only recently started to accept girls in service at the altar, and by an large, they have been safe.
To quote you, "Hmmm...".
From my experience, which goes back to my days as a teenaged member of the threatre community in Hollywood, the gay males glorify youth as beauty.
Ever catch the series on Showtime TV called "Queer as Folk?". I don't get Showtime, but I was in San Francisco in January, and the hotel had free Showtime. One of the characters is played by a blonde haired, blue eyed actor Charlie Hunnan who looks about 14.
Check him out:

So... I turn on the TV in this bay area hotel, and what do I see? Cute, young, underaged looking Charlie screaming "OH MY GOD! DOES IT ALWAYS HURT THIS MUCH?". He's got his ankles up by his ears and an older character is vigorously sodomizing him as he continues to scream in pain.
I guess it is a good thing Charlie isn't an actress that looks 14, or someone might have found that scene offensive. Instead, the series is a hit, with "critical acclaim".
Perhaps I'm a bigot, but in my opinion, cute teenage boys are not safe around gay men.
For whatever reason, the Catholic Church has attracted an unusual number of gay men to their clergy. I'm not surprised that the vast number of victims are teenage boys.
I'm not saying this is a good thing, or a less evil thing. I'm saying that this isn't your typical nursery school child molesting case.
It is definately bad/wrong/evil, but it is a different situation than the public is used to dealing with.
