Being ashamed of belonging to the Family is the single most confusing element in their image. A good example is the FCF's denial. Of course the sorry history of pedophoilia and abuse is the well known reason but it's still sad not to have come to terms with it and with those who were abused. It was a beautiful dream turned into a nightmare.
The "better than thou" hovering attitude MG describes is so pervasive that it becomes invisible until one starts questioning how real (and even Christian) are the foundation beliefs. After a little while one can't avoid to see that it is a castle built on the sand.
