Marina,
I think you have very good insight into this substance subject.
I heard somewhere (Time or Newsweek?) that alcoholics lack a certain chemical in their brain. This chemical tells you when you've had enough to drink. Therefore, most individuals can quit drinking, because this chemical tells them "You've had enough." Whereas an alcoholic lacks this chemical, so they just don't know when to quit. Have you heard about this?
Regarding smoking, I hope your daughters will be able to quit, while they are still young. Nicotine is a very, very addictive substance. I rarely smoke anymore, but I do chew tobacco. However, the older I get, and the often I attempt to quit, the more successful I become.
They say that one rarely is successful the first time. Most people fail to use nicotine over and over again, but I was also told the more often you try to quit, the more successful you become each time.
