Just kidding!
Astute observations! You are correct. This can be a cult substitute. A board is a scratch pad, and can only reflect the states of the people who use it. Someone said something about boards having the DNA of their creators though. So it is up to the moderators to initiate and maintain the atmosphere. There is the antagonism and frustration. I suppose a lot of that can't be helped. I'm sure a lot of people switch handles to get the anonymity they need in order to express their frustration. Thus "Observer." There are also tender moments, when people are confused and in trouble, and they get the help answers they need. If there is a formula for leaving a cult and adjusting to normal life, I don't know what it is, and boards like this one may not be part of it. On the other hand, several people who have left TF have remarked how they were reading the boards secretly, and how much it helped.
