I really think it is different, because it is done in the name of God.
It's a horrible thing for a kid to have to seek relief from a trusted adult, but how does one do that when they have been told from birth that this is Gods will?
Even in the Catholic Church, the incidents were isolated. The Pope didn't come out and tell Priests that it was right and Godly to sexually abuse children.
The fact that child abuse was institutionalized in The Family is what makes it worse than the majority of child abuse that happens in the outside world.
To me, it is right up there with soldiers who rape women and children under the orders of their commanding officer. It's done under the color of authority, and in my opinion it is worse.
