Today, a little heresy for the Rev. Vladimir Putin….In his op-ed piece in the New York Times, Russian President Vladimir Putin donned some highly unlikely pastoral robes to preach to America about its sin of exceptionalism. The pastor of the Great Church of the Holy Imposter declared that all nations are different, “but when we ask for the Lord’s blessings, we must not forget that God created us equal.” Well, I’m afraid I can’t sing the Hallelujah Chorus to the idea that all nations are the same. I don’t believe that nations that murder their own citizens, whether with gas, bullets or bombs, or those that call for the annihilation of all Jews or Christians, often in God’s name, are equal to those that at least attempt to function as a nation of laws. Forgive me, Rev. Putin, but I’ll keep believing America is an exceptional country, and refuse to believe that it’s dangerous to believe that. I think we’ve just learned that the danger comes when we stop believing that we’re exceptional, and we think that we have to call on Russia to rescue us.
