"The media" is used by many in political talk that supports right wing views and to mean journalists, newspapers, radio, TV stations and other outlets that do not openly support right wing views.
A similar stand is taken by some conservatives and libertarians. All of these groups are more often than not associated to views prevalent in the Republican party.
In general, the term "the media" in the USA is used to gain underdog status by claiming destitution and abandonment. The intention is to acquire sympathy among poorly informed populations.
