Maria may stirred Berg up and egged him on in his cruel treatment of Mene because she felt threatened by the possibility of being displaced by his favorite grandchild. In his article about Mene, Ricky explained that Berg was always threatening to replace Maria, particularly when she complained too much about his drinking. What better way to attempt to control the problem of Berg's drinking than through the backdoor of a scapegoat? By encouraging and manipulating Mene's criticism of the behavior, Maria could also eliminate her as a competitor.
