A buddy of mine who wasn't in TFI has learned quite a bit about them through my experience and this site. She travels around the world and keeps her eyes open for groups doing social work. She brings pictures and pamphlets of all sorts of groups she has the opportunity to meet, and we compare notes. We have seen a trend developed first as a way of survival and second to do fund raising.
Our earlier notions of "abandoning the system" to forsake all are not there anymore. They still ask new disciples to forsake all and abandone "their" system but only to return and spoil them after indoctrination.
Even with Berg, encouragement of ignorance in their followers was managed. Those with a little education (and other useful skills such as military) advanced in their system. But the current guidance is to encouraged some of their people to get educated.
They have realized that an educated con man is a better con man. For years they have been joining, stealing or in anyway taking over legitimate social service activities. Pretty clever, like their father, isn't it?
So now it is difficult to know who is legit or is not. They send their children to learn more mainstream things that can be used to have better lives. At least in a sense they are being more real instead of promoting beggars, or Bergars.
