Here I am referring only to nationality and ethnic identity which is getting harder and harder to define according to traditional parameters because populations are so mixed nowadays. (Actually I think they have always been hard to define, but in the past we may have been a lot more willing to buy simple answers we want to hear about someone's identity.)
I do not mean to say that if a confidence trickster says they are honest therefore they are. Therefore, if a TFI spokesperson says they have apologized for something when in fact no meaningful apology or reparation has been forthcoming, it does not mean that they are really "sorry" about anything. So in that respect, how outsiders perceive you DOES matter!
