I saw the movie some time ago and just few days ago thought about this paradigmen-system-change in life, also my life or SGAs life...and I remembered the movie
"Everything she believed in vanished just in a few month"...so funny how she wants some good old east German food, which is meanwhile hard to get (Zerby-diet)...or the old " young pioneer" - that's how they were called I think - songs sung for her birthday, they had to pay the kids to sing old stuff...and ups, the sign of the "class-enemy" classenemy was America with all his sattelites etc. etc.
Sorry...the metaphor, allegory...between TF/Zerby/SGAs after leaving and the movie is not 1:1 perfect...but like the wall came down...people left the confines of TF by the 10000s (of course TF is not just for everyone it's for theeeeeeeeee elite...and not everybody is that good)...
but I like the movies set-up, how she (convinced socialist) goes into coma, because or by coincidence her used & beloved GDR (DDR) is in some turmoil and basically wakes up in a "system-shift"/paradigmenshift....I guess that happens to anyone leaving TF...so it is kind of symbolic also leaving TF...sympathising relatives don't want the mother to suffer another heart attack & they don't know how to crack her the news, that the GDR is now a thing of the past, because of her frail health
I guess Zerby hasn't really woken up to that yet???...I love the scene when the helicopter with the demolished Lenin-statue passes her by...Good bye Berg...and MO-books I'd say...(I don't know what Lenin had under the arm,das Kapital???)
I mean in my youth that was the in-thing the ideological clash between left & right...communism was the in thing...we had acquantainces/friends as flesh & bloodfamily in East-Berlin and it's amazing how much they got indoctrinated with their "superior" teachings...it was mandatory...from highschool up to university.
Good bye Lenin...good bye Berg and Zerby
Oh...I posted it some time ago...Zerby might come from Zerbst (I think former GDR!!!!! village/town)...this little town in Germany...might be, where her ancestors came from...and did I tell you on the board, I hope/I thought so, that David Brandt Berg - like MO claimed - has nothing to do with the former chancelor Willi Brandt...that's an alias...when I checked that many decades/years ago, I cracked up laughing
But there is this German background unfortunately even in the TF hierarchy it seems...oh well, hollywood is about right, when they need a villain as an actor, they prefer a German...LOL...well, there are too many examples in history, that you can't help to give in somehow.
Anyway I enjoyed that clip again... usually I see few German movies...can't stand the moral compass in most modern German movies, watch rather bollywood etc.
However, there are quite a few East-German citizens who lament over the gone good old past...for one thing they might be right though, they say it was "warmer"...more social warmth between the people (not the ratrace for money, neither shortage in jobs)...but if you consider all the spying on each other, the Stasi-methods, I can't really believe that so much either...
