I think there is a difference between a swat and a spank. I also think it's not the place of "government" or "do gooders" to dictate to parents how they should discipline. If you think just talking and negotiating is going to train up a child then I think we're a little naive. Even adults can hardly negotiate their way through life without causing a mess (that's why we have laws and consequences). Do understand that beating a child is not right, but a swat for a child old enough to understand isn't all wrong on the part of the parent. It's a sensitive issue, and different countries and parents address the issue in different ways, but I figure that loving parents will on the most part discipline with a little thought and love, even if a swat is forthcoming. Otherwise, just hand your kids over to the "government" and "experts", and hope for the best. Oh, and to try and negotiate or explain right and wrong with a 3 year old who is screaming their head off is a challenge, so I say good luck to your son.
