My assumption, the pilot is "in it"...if that should/could be the case...the point is, in the absence of all other good explanations you/one might wind up with a conspiracy-explanation, is it so awkward?

Consider that the pilot who is "in it" eventually must land his plane and return to Earth to breathe the very air he has just contaminated, not to mention all of those involved from production of the plan to its implementation.
