They act like cirrus clouds, trap heat below them, and contribute to global warming when they don't dissipate. Thanks to 9/11 when air traffic was shut down for 3 days, we now know a lot more about their effects on the atmosphere. Contrails made in the day time dissipate easier. For that reason it is better to fly during the day if you don't want to be part of the problem.
