It is not mandatory to have paid clergy, I can be an example. I do receive money for gas each month and if the senior pastor is out of town and I am in the pulpit and do a sermon I receive an honorarium. Being a pastor of a church is a full time job in itself a there is more to it than showing up on Sun. I have two services for my young people that I prepare each week. To say the least it is time consuming. A pastor is on call 24/7 with other resposibilities such as counseling, visitation, and other things that may come up. It is not to say that the level of the clergy is placed above that of other believers. Each believer is a part of the body and each part of the body has a function so that the complete body functions properly. Hopefully in the church setting there is plenty of "ministry done from the pew" as there is just so much room on that platform. It begs a question is the church an organism, or an organization. To function properly and grow it must be both. Myself being a member of a "mainsteam" denomination and seeing what the church is able to do aside from what happens on Sun. I amglad that the clergy is paid. It is a hard job and what they receive in most cases is well deserved.
