You make several good points. What I truly believe in my heart of hearts is that there will be no real changes in the US until there is much more suffering, particularly widespread economic suffering.
I am actually somewhat indifferent as to who wins the next election. I'm not convinced that Obama can bring about the change he promises, NOR do I believe McCain will preside over four more years of Bush Republicanism.
What I think is likely to happen is that McCain will win the presidency and the Democrats will win control of Congress (both houses). Historically, in situations like this, US government has functioned best. That's because Congress can curb the power of the president, and a skillful president can give direction and focus to Congressional spending & legislation.
