Did you take a hit on this one, James? Is that the source of your howling so loud about something that has no relevance in your life?
FYI, there is a whole continuum of things that adults do to children that fall somewhere between "a little smack on the behind" and "beating the crap out of a kid." Smacking someone on the buttocks and upper thighs stimulates circulatory and nervous system arousal. When it comes to registering arousal stimuli, the brain doesn't easily separate out pleasure and pain, because both neural pathways are closely intertwined. In any event, the meaning of such stimuli must learn to be interpreted. If someone who beats your butt tells you they love you, well, it must be love you're feeling with all that pain.
But hey, that's just a little neurophysiological science that might explain the research findings. You're free to believe whatever you want about how the mind works.
