Good question. As the official solicitor, appointed to supervise Bobby's interests, said: "This is a sad story..."
This is eerily similar to my own story. A 16 year old, easily manipulated by cultists with the same cultic, absolutist, fundamentalist interpretation of the Bible. But it's not just cultists to blame, it's also the reverence the Bible as a "holy" book is given by society in general. That reverence softens the ground, so to speak, so that charlatans can do their dirty work on innocent minds not yet fully-armed with reason, logic, skepticism and history to ward off those evil doers. Anyone who thinks a 16 year old is ready to make life-altering decisions without the benefit of that armor is fooling themselves. After all, that is precisely why Bobby was made a ward of the court, because he was not in a position to make life-decisions that were in his own best interest. I sure hope his story turns out better than mine.
