Interesting discussion. These days you can't simply judge by the name of a political party. The provincial government where I live is called the Liberal party but by their beliefs and policies they are actually a conservative party. That particular party is only about 20 years old. Before that, there was the Social Credit Party, which had power for about 30 years. It was a political vehicle for fiscal and social conservatives and when it eventually collapsed, the current Liberal party rose from its ashes.
Where ever there are political parties calling themselves Liberals or Conservatives, it has now become necessary to distinguish between small "l" and big "L" liberals and the same for small "c" and big "C" conservatives. And then, as you've been discussing, there are variations of those.
