I know from my time going toe to toe with the so-called "Pro-COG Editors" on Wikipedia, that this is what they do.
The first line of defense is that it never happened.
Then if it did happen, it didn't happen very often, and has been exaggerated and blown out of proportion.
I doubt that someone from the general public would feel qualified to make that comment, so I would hazard a guess that people who are have some kind of interest in minimizing the impact of this negative publicity.
