Just finished reading Jane Harrison's PROLEGOMENA TO THE STUDY OF THE GREEK RELIGION, and I finally feel I have filled up the holes in my knowledge and the gaps in my grip on history.
Here's my conclusion, and a reaction to hyper- inflated cult statistics:
It seems the more things change, the more they stay the same. Cults are an individual's inward turn to the primal past that is printed on their DNA.
Everyone wants to be alone with their Saviour in the Garden--and the saviour can be a spaceman, an alien, or a Greek god, or even a rock star; and the garden can be in a holy union with the Messiah(spiritual marriage), or a conquering of all the nasty space demons that drag you down.
Will cults ever change? No.
Will religions ever change? No.
Do I have to join a cult? No.
If I was born in a cult should I be able to leave? Yes.
Are cults above the law? No.
When is a cult not a cult? When the members value their own character above the dogma of "We are all individuals."
