Nice quotation Voltaire. Did you know that it was also the Quote Of The Week in the online newsletter DrugSense Weekly, Feb. 2, 2007, #485, which is an anti-prohibition publication documenting and exposing the absurdity, hypocrisy, cruelty and injustice of the war on illicit drugs (in that war, legal drugs are ok even though they kill far more people.)
The translation of the quotation they give is: "Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities", which I think is a more accurate translation and speaks directly to the issue of psychological manipulation in TF.
(In relation to the war on drugs, the absurdities are all the lies and propaganda used by the state to create unjust laws and the atrocities are all the many harms, including extreme injustice and even death, caused by state enforcers of those unjust laws. The many consequences of prohibition cause more harm to individuals and society than do the drugs themselves.)
