You can't imagine how technically challenged I am when it comes to VCRs, DVDs and other electronic entertainment equipment. It's not that I can't figure out how to use the timer and its record feature--it's that I have antique hardware and an impossibly complicated entertainment system configured my husband. This is a system that still runs a turntable for records. Half the stuff in the system doesn't work the way you might think it should. I'm not entirely certain the antique VCR can be programmed to tape a show if the TV isn't turned on.
