Thanks for that. I know that even though you were in much longer, I think for most of us that are in TF and get out, at least for me, I am a very different person outside than I was when in, just as I was a very different person before getting in it.
I also think that how I processed life was similar to being in a relationship with a batterer. Things that happened to me or that I allowed were greatly influenced by the batterer or the cult leader and society looks at me and says "WHY DIDN'T YOU LEAVE?"
It just is not that simple.
There are people who are even quick to blame Elizabeth Smart, who was a young minor who was taken at knifepoint, for what happened to her and were disgusted with her because she didn't leave when she had the opportunity, or the
p e r c e i v e d opportunity.
The good thing is that she got away, we got out, others get out and though there are scars that cover wounds of varying depths, there is healing to be had, and life after the cult.
And whether a person gets out of a battered situation or out of a cult, whether out a year ago, yesterday or two decades ago or more, we all deserve healing.
