I don't know; isn't a lot of religious "leadership" carried out in an air of parenthood (not to say "paternalism"...)?

Some religions even use "father", and those who don't use another term that reflects their superior status in your world.

As a female, I venture to say that the physical reality of your physical integrity (linked, especially at young ages, with the psyche) can be an event that robs you of your sense of personal (psychic and material) integrity.

The bizzarre thing is that some of this infantilization can arrive via people who purport to confer a special adulthood on you. The self-regarding fuckers. That is no less infantilizing.

I doubt that the difference in age made infantilization less of a factor for Elizabeth to contend with.

My one question is: it must have been so much harder to endure for her, who had origins in an apparently cherishing family, than for one like I, prized only as a child soldier is.

On the other hand, she had a home to be torn from.

People also don't get how a child can come to believe that they will be rejected because of the degrading acts done on us.

In a case like that boy's, i would not put it past a mind that gave up on hope in order to survive to think -- just as people wonder why he did not make himself known in such apparent daylight -- that the actual adults could recognize and take him back if they wished.

That life as a hostage is its own animal. Apparently nobody who is much into St. Francis' prayer (seek to understand) has given it much care.
