What I reacted to is Ironside's absolutely absurd and antagonistic first paragraph: "What planet are you from??? Since when did "the Internet community" consult the lamers in the mainstream media on their perceptions of "the Internet"???"
His first sentence is just a childish insult and a personal putdown. As far as I know, humans don't exist on other planets. ;) As for his second sentence, I doubt very much if he even read the article I posted. There are so many holes in his logic I don't know where to begin.
First, he sets up a false dichotomy when he refers to the "internet community" as if it is something different from the mainstream media. The article I posted consisted almost entirely of responses from people in the "internet community" who had read the original article.
The NY Times has an excellent free email service whereby it is delivered daily to your inbox. Just because somebody reads the NY Times doesn't mean they are mainstream lamers, as Ironsides puts it. Mainstream is the last adjective anyone who knows me would use to describe me. Daily I scan a dozen or more online news services, the majority of which would be considered alternative press. In order to be a critical consumer of information, it's good to get all sides, even if that means reading mainstream papers. Ironsides, on the otherhand, doesn't seem to care about objectivity and is only interested in condemning those who don't think like him.
As for his absurd assertion that the "internet community", and by that I can only assume he is refering to me and my original post containing the NYT article, is "consulting" the NYT, that is just another meaningless insult. If anything, it was the NYT column writer that was consulting the "internet community" because the article was 95% comments from readers, who as I have already pointed out, are not necessarily mainstream just because they read that paper.
I thought many of the comments in the article were relevant to discussions here about internet civility, and that was the only reason I posted it. Ironsides has not only insulted me personally, but his uninformed assumptions are simply wrong.
I'm sure he doesn't give a rats ass though, because he seems to imply in his various rants here that social conventions and rules don't apply to him. (sound familiar?) He comes here with his holier-than-thou attitude, accusing people of cult-like behavior, dropping f-bombs and generally showing himself to be uncouth. If that's your idea of a hero, you can have him.
