My understanding of the career ladder in the ivory tower places a lecturer at the bottom of the totem pole. The university and the department must be desperate to hire a man who doesn’t have a terminal degree, unless he happens to have convincing credentials in research, publications and/or presentations.
But web page of the sociology department’s chair, a Dr. O’Brien shows that he was teaching a course on The Family (a very interesting name for a course) to deceive those in the upper ranks that oversee curriculum. (See: http://web.csustan.edu/Sociology/Obrien/ )
Maybe this man was teaching a course on The Family (the link to the syllabus doesn’t work anymore to see what the course description was) – but when you look at the department’s web page, it clearly says that one of the areas of interest for the department is, among others, the family (lower case). Maybe this O’Brien guy is in cahoots with The Family to teach about them; their version, of course. Maybe he already is a half-hearted member who is more useful outside (e.g. catacomber) than inside. TF would be happy to supply a member with a half baked degree and some deceptive credentials to take over the course.
