Limited resources? Where I went for help

Posted by Helped me on October 27, 2006 at 02:28:22

I just wanted to write that I was barely thirty when I left TF and did not know that I needed help. I had severe panic attacks, a long history of abuse as a child and then abuse in the cult.

Many people leave and don't have resources to deal with the fall out of the cult or of abuse from the past. ABUSE DOES NOT HAVE TO BE CURRENT to qualify for help via a women's center. I found some excellent referrals and start at getting help via a women's center hotline.

Therapists that routinely deal with survivors of incest, sexual assault and the dynamics of controlling abusers are often well equipped to deal with the kinds of abuses that occurred in the Family, especially since there are not many cult experts out there, and of the ones that ARE out there, they are not always all that aware of what cults are about.

So here are a few TEXAS area places that maybe someone might benefit from contacting:

AUSTIN TX: Safe Place 24 hr hotline 512-267-7233 Helps survivors of rape, incest and domestic violence. Website:
www.austin-safeplace.org

Houston: Houston Area Women's Center
Crisis intervention number: 713-528-2121

I experienced severe panic attacks, depression, PTSD and it was exacerbated by physical problems I had including starting a perimenopausal state in my mid thirties and having other physical challenges.

If you need medicine like I did, for years, especially for treatment of depression and anxiety, getting a referral from a women's center often connects people with a professional who routinely works with survivors.

Hope this might help someone.

Also, getting a physical and well woman exam, checked for STDs etc very helpful.
