Well, at the risk of veering into a political discussion...which I'm truly not wanting to do...I would say that many people in the U.S., myself in particular, have a hard time knowing what or who to believe any more. I don't trust the mainstream media, and I don't trust the government. My distrust of the government and commercial media isn't unique to this administration or the current historical era, it goes back to not believing the official version of the Kennedy assassination. It's not that I'm big into conspiracy theories about the Kennedy assassination, it's just that the facts don't add up to me--too many loose ends are not satisfactorily explained.
The events of 9/11 only re-activated my latent distrust of government authority and official accounts of history. I think the independent, bi-partisan 9/11 Commission probably did a good job of getting at what happened on 9/11 in their report, but I've still got unanswered questions, particularly after listening to some issues raised by Scholars for 9/11 Truth.
Here's why my comments shouldn't be considered political: I don't have any opinions one way or another about a government conspiracy--I just have a longstanding distrust and natural skepticism about official versions of historical events.
I'll admit it: I'm somewhat prone to a survivalist mentality. That was a big part of my attraction to COG in the 1970s.
